Introduction to Lean

Introduction to Lean is a day-long, interactive, workshop where you will observe the power of the principles of Lean Manufacturing to revolutionize your own shop-floor operations. Course topics include: Introduction to the 8 wastes, standardized work, workplace organization, visual controls, set-up reduction, batch size reduction, point of use storage, quality at the source, cellular manufacturing and pull systems. Since the lean process must be maintained by management and permeated throughout the organization as a cultural way of doing business, additional emphasis will be on how to Sustain a Lean Culture. The Sustaining Lean module shows how to instill the Lean philosophy and techniques into the workforce and prepares Lean leaders to foster the sustained process of continuous improvement.

The Lean Office

Bringing Lean concepts that originated in a production or manufacturing environment into the office has a number of benefits. To help you realize these benefits, The Lean Office Workshop will teach participants how to improve and streamline all business processes, as well as how to eliminate those that are cumbersome or unnecessary. This practical, hands-on training workshop will provide you with the foundation that will allow you to create a new vision to make your company globally competitive in the 21st Century. Participants will simulate from the production side of products to the shipment to the customers. Participants run through many simulation processes and analyze the results. Based on their analyses, the attendees will have the opportunity to identify and implement changes to the system allowing participants to see and analyze the financial benefit of implementing Lean.

Creating Just-in-time Logistics Flow

In this indepth workshop you will learn about conventional OEM sequenced and pull replenished parts supplier operations, the inbound manufacturing supply chain, internal manufacturing materials management, OEM service parts warehousing and distribution operations and customer requirements and results. You will learn about just-in-time manufacturing & logistics principles This presentation shows you how visual operations management approaches can be used to orchestrate coupled just-in-time flow from suppliers, through the inbound raw materials supply chain, through manufacturing operations, then through storage and distribution systems to the customer.

Jim Price gained his credentials in global logistics operations while serving for a period of over twenty years as a logistics officer and defense industrial operations commander within the US Army and while serving as General Manager over Ryder Integrated Logistics’ Toyota North America team. Jim has also served as Plant Manager over two large scale highway tractor & trailer remanufacturing plants, a steel crankshaft forging company, and as Director of Operations over a hydraulic and pneumatic drive control machining and assembly manufacturer. Within two of these operations, he successfully transformed a significant portion of the operations to function within the principles of lean manufacturing and implemented kanban pull systems to manage both material and work-in-process (WIP) flows. Additionally, Jim, as Director of Logistics and Production Control, both designed and successfully managed the transformation of a large scale forklift assembly plant to the cultural of lean manufacturing and just-in-time logistics. Jim’s technical credentials include a Master of Science degree in Operations Research and Systems Engineering, and is certified through the University of Kentucky in Lean manufacturing.

Lean Performance Measures and Lean Accounting 101

As companies implement Lean principles, it becomes clear that accounting information designed for traditional manufacturing practices falls short of providing vital information for decisions in a Lean organization. This workshop will provide an overview of Lean accounting methodologies and Lean performance measures. Good measurement in a Lean organization doesn’t come automatically and bad measurements can undermine successfully reaching goals. The impact of measures on people and performance is complex and is especially critical during times of change. It is critical to assess whether your performance measures promote Lean decisions and behavior, as well as ensure their alignment with strategic objectives. In this workshop, we will use two hands-on activities to help you assess and align metrics in a Lean organization.
